Happy July, everyone! In case you were unaware, July marks the start of National Ice Cream Month. All it really means is that you’re given a 31-day excuse to eat as much ice cream as you possibly can, and no one can really say anything about it.
Enjoyed by children and adults alike, ice cream is an iconic American summer treat. So much so, that in 1984, President Ronald Reagan designated July as National Ice Cream Month, and the third Sunday of July as National Ice Cream Day. As Winter Park’s premier fine-dining venue, Park Plaza Gardens knows just how much ice cream is enjoyed by young and old alike, and how essential it is to some of America’s oldest desserts.
Park Plaza Gardens’ signature Seasonal Mason Jar Cobblers, apple cranberry flavored and topped with brown sugar oat streusel, would not be the same without vanilla bean ice cream, for one. Also, our Spiced Caramel Cake with caramel icing is only complete after a scoop of vanilla bean ice cream has been artfully added to the plate.
Just for fun, here are some interesting notes on the history of ice cream:
• While its origins can plausibly be traced as far back as the second century B.C., the first official account of ice cream in the New World comes from a letter written in 1744 by a guest of Maryland Governor William Bladen.
• Until 1800, ice cream remained a rare and exotic dessert enjoyed mostly by the elite. Around 1800, insulated ice houses were invented. Manufacturing ice cream soon became an industry in America, pioneered in 1851 by a Baltimore milk dealer named Jacob Fussell.
• Wide availability of ice cream in the late 19th century led to new creations. In 1874, the American soda fountain shop and the profession of the “soda jerk” emerged with the invention of the ice cream soda.
• Ice cream became an edible morale symbol during World War II. Each branch of the military tried to outdo the others in serving ice cream to its troops. In 1945, the first “floating ice cream parlor” was built for sailors in the western Pacific. When the war ended, and dairy product rationing was lifted, America celebrated its victory with ice cream. Americans consumed over 20 quarts of ice cream per person in 1946.
